WPBeginner did an article on the three best WordPress gallery plugins[1] and they looked at the following:
- Envira Gallery
- Foo Gallery
- NextGEN Gallery
NextGen is by far the most popular and has more features but Envira came out on top because it was more user friendly and has a lot of useful options.
Envira beat the other galleries on speed, ease of use and you’re able to import stuff from NextGen, a feature also found with Foo Gallery. NextGen doesn’t have import/export settings.

Out of all three I very much like Envira which is free in the WordPress repository and also has paid plans to unlock more features.
Envira:
- is fast loading (does not slow down your site)
- is mobile responsive
- has templates for displaying your galleries
- has social media integration
- has watermark protection
- is Woocommerce ready
- can organize photos in albums and sort with tags
- has slideshow and fullscreen capabilities
- works with video
- is SEO friendly: can deeplink and paginate
- is drag and drop
- has password protection addon
- can disable right click to protect from unwanted downloading
- has print addon
- has EXIF addon to display camera values like aperture, shutter speed, camera model etc.
- and a lot more features..

Most of the features however are only available with the premium version of the plugin as the free version which works well on its only only lets you have the most basic features.
