Safe is a very general word. I will separate this in 3 childs.
- PRIVATE, SECURE, ANONYM
Shortest and clearest answer for you:
Firefox is designed for PRIVACY.
Chrome is designed for SECURITY.
Tor Browser (based on Firefox) is designed for ANONYMITY.
Chrome is designed for SECURITY.
Tor Browser (based on Firefox) is designed for ANONYMITY.
What do I mean with this?
- By PRIVACY, I mean that only you and your ISP have access to your browsing data, if you choose Firefox.
- By SECURITY, I mean you have more security but less privacy, only You, Google and your ISP have access to your browsing data (or more), if you choose Chrome.
Chrome architecture provides more sandboxing security for the users than Firefox.
- By ANONYMITY, I mean only you alone. If you choose The Onion Router (TOR).
My Recommendations:
- For private daily usage: Brave Software (Brave Browser)
- If you are an Journalist, Human Rights activist or similar: Anonymity Online (Tor Browser)
Every browser I mentioned has a mobile version too.
Update:
By “data” I mean, your daily browser activity, and not any other data outside it.
Update 2:
People in comments are badmouthing Chrome, but Chrome is a really secure browser, you are again, mixing security with privacy. Otherwise you can use Chromium, a Chrome without Google if you want Google out.
Firefox, again mixing Privacy with Security, XSS Cross Scripting Protection is weak on Firefox, maybe, but it is not a Privacy issue, it is Security issue.
* I’ve written an article on my blog for people who are having problems understanding Security and Privacy, I called it Security vs. Privacy.
